Hydroponics Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a way of growing plants in water with dissolved minerals instead of soil.

In hydroponic systems, what do plant roots sit in?

The roots sit in a solution of water with dissolved mineral ions, called a nutrient solution.

What is mixed with the water in hydroponics to feed the plants?

Mineral nutrients, such as nitrates and phosphates, are dissolved in the water to feed the plants.

Why can plants be grown closer together in hydroponics than in soil?

Plants can be closer together because each plant gets the right amount of water and minerals from the solution, so they do not compete for soil nutrients.

How can hydroponics increase crop yield?

Hydroponics can increase yield because conditions like water, minerals and often light and temperature are closely controlled, so plants grow faster and healthier.

Why is hydroponics useful in areas with poor or thin soil?

It is useful because plants do not need soil, so crops can be grown even where the soil is poor, thin or polluted.

Why are many hydroponic systems placed in greenhouses or indoors?

They are placed in greenhouses or indoors so temperature, light, carbon dioxide and pests can be controlled.

How can hydroponics help save water compared with normal field farming?

Hydroponics can save water because the nutrient solution is collected, cleaned if needed, and used again instead of soaking away into the ground.

Why must roots still get oxygen in a hydroponic system?

Roots need oxygen for aerobic respiration, so they can release energy for growth and do not rot.

Name one disadvantage of using hydroponics for food production.

A disadvantage is that hydroponic systems can be expensive to set up and need careful monitoring and a constant supply of electricity.
