What is contraception?

Contraception is any method that helps stop a woman becoming pregnant.

What is hormonal contraception?

Hormonal contraception uses hormones to control the menstrual cycle and stop pregnancy.

Name two examples of hormonal contraception.

Examples include the contraceptive pill and the hormonal implant. Other examples are the injection and the skin patch.

Which two hormones are in the combined contraceptive pill?

The combined pill contains oestrogen and progesterone.

How does the combined pill help prevent pregnancy?

It stops the release of an egg each month. It also makes mucus in the cervix thicker so sperm find it hard to reach an egg.

How does the progesterone-only pill (mini pill) prevent pregnancy?

It makes mucus in the cervix thicker, so sperm cannot pass through easily. It can also stop the release of an egg.

Why should the contraceptive pill be taken at the same time every day?

This keeps hormone levels steady. If a pill is missed, an egg may be released and pregnancy can happen.

How does a hormonal implant work as contraception?

A small rod is put under the skin and releases progesterone. This stops the release of eggs and thickens cervical mucus for several years.

How does a hormonal injection prevent pregnancy?

It puts progesterone into the body. This stops ovulation and thickens mucus in the cervix for several weeks or months.

Give one advantage and one disadvantage of hormonal contraception.

Advantage: It is very effective at preventing pregnancy. Disadvantage: It can cause side effects such as mood changes and it does not protect against STIs.
