Alleles and Variants Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is an allele?

An allele is a different version of the same gene.

How many alleles for each gene does a human usually have and where do they come from?

A human usually has two alleles for each gene, one from their mother and one from their father.

What is meant by a genetic variant of a characteristic?

A genetic variant is a different form of a characteristic caused by differences in alleles or DNA.

What does genotype mean?

Genotype is the combination of alleles an organism has for a gene or genes.

What does phenotype mean?

Phenotype is the visible characteristic or feature that results from the genotype and the environment.

What is a dominant allele?

A dominant allele is one that affects the phenotype even if only one copy is present.

What is a recessive allele?

A recessive allele only affects the phenotype when two copies are present.

What does homozygous mean?

Homozygous means having two of the same alleles for a gene.

What does heterozygous mean?

Heterozygous means having two different alleles for a gene.

How do different alleles in a population lead to variation?

Different alleles give different genotypes, which can produce different phenotypes, so individuals show variation.
