Exercise and Gas Exchange Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is gas exchange in the lungs?

It is the swap of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air in the lungs and the blood.

Where in the lungs does most gas exchange happen?

Most gas exchange happens in tiny air sacs called alveoli.

Give two ways alveoli are adapted for fast gas exchange.

They have a large surface area and very thin, moist walls with a good blood supply.

What is meant by tidal volume?

Tidal volume is the volume of air you breathe in or out in one normal breath.

What is meant by vital capacity?

Vital capacity is the maximum volume of air you can breathe out after the deepest breath in.

What happens to your breathing rate when you start to exercise, and why?

It increases so more oxygen reaches your muscles and more carbon dioxide is removed.

What happens to your tidal volume during hard exercise?

Your tidal volume increases, so you move more air in and out with each breath.

How does regular exercise affect your lungs over time?

It can increase your vital capacity and make breathing muscles stronger, so gas exchange is more efficient.

How can you work out breathing rate in breaths per minute?

Count breaths for 30 seconds, then multiply the number by two.

What is minute ventilation and how is it calculated?

Minute ventilation is the volume of air breathed each minute. It equals tidal volume times breathing rate.
