Plant Meristems Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a plant meristem?

A plant meristem is a region where cells keep dividing to make new cells for growth.

Where are meristems found in a plant?

Meristems are mainly found at the tips of roots and shoots, and in buds.

What type of cell division happens in meristems?

Cells in meristems divide by mitosis.

Why are meristem cells called stem cells?

They are called stem cells because they are unspecialised and can become any type of plant cell.

How do meristems help a plant grow in length?

Meristems make new cells by mitosis, and then these cells grow longer, so the root or shoot gets longer.

How are plant meristems different from most animal stem cells?

Plant meristems stay active for the whole life of the plant, but most animal stem cells are only active when young.

Why can some plants grow new roots or shoots from a cutting?

Cells near the cut can act like meristem cells, divide, and then specialise into new root or shoot cells.

What does it mean to clone a plant using meristems?

It means to grow many new plants from meristem tissue so they are all genetically identical to the original plant.

How are meristems used in plant tissue culture (micropropagation)?

Small pieces of meristem are taken, placed in a sterile nutrient jelly, and grown into many new identical plants.

Give one advantage of cloning plants using meristems.

Farmers or gardeners can quickly produce many plants with useful features, such as good yield or disease resistance.

Give one use of cloning plants with meristems in conservation.

Meristems can be used to clone rare or endangered plants so their numbers increase.

Give one disadvantage of cloning plants using meristems.

All the cloned plants are genetically identical, so a new disease could kill them all.
