The Cell Cycle Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is the cell cycle?

The cell cycle is the series of steps a cell goes through to grow and then divide to make new cells.

Why is the cell cycle important in your body?

The cell cycle is important for growth, repairing damaged tissues and replacing old or dead cells.

What are the three main stages of the cell cycle?

The three main stages are cell growth, DNA replication and cell division (mitosis).

What happens during the growth stage of the cell cycle?

The cell gets bigger and makes more sub-cellular structures, such as mitochondria and ribosomes.

What happens during DNA replication in the cell cycle?

The cell makes an exact copy of its DNA so there are two copies of each chromosome.

What is mitosis in the cell cycle?

Mitosis is the stage where the copied chromosomes are separated and the nucleus divides.

What happens to the cell membrane and cytoplasm at the end of the cell cycle?

The cell membrane and cytoplasm divide to form two separate cells.

What do we call the new cells made at the end of the cell cycle?

The new cells are called daughter cells.

How do daughter cells compare to the original cell after the cell cycle?

Daughter cells are genetically identical to each other and to the original cell.

Where is the DNA that is copied during the cell cycle found in an animal cell?

The DNA is found in the nucleus of the cell.
