What is asthma?

Asthma is a long-term illness where the airways in the lungs become narrow and sensitive.

What happens to the bronchioles during an asthma attack?

The muscles in the bronchioles tighten, the lining swells, and extra mucus is made, so the airways get narrower.

Name three common triggers of an asthma attack.

Dust, pollen, and exercise are common triggers. Cold air and smoke can also trigger attacks.

What are two common symptoms of asthma?

Wheezing and shortness of breath are common. People may also cough and feel a tight chest.

Why can asthma make a person feel short of breath?

Narrow airways let less air reach the lungs, so less oxygen gets into the blood.

What is a reliever inhaler used for in asthma?

A reliever inhaler is used during an asthma attack to quickly ease symptoms.

How does a reliever inhaler work?

It contains a drug that relaxes the muscles in the bronchioles, so the airways widen and it is easier to breathe.

What is a preventer inhaler used for in asthma?

A preventer inhaler is used every day to lower the chance of an asthma attack.

How do steroid drugs in preventer inhalers help people with asthma?

Steroids reduce swelling and mucus in the airways, making them less sensitive to triggers.

Why is it important for someone with asthma to carry their reliever inhaler?

An asthma attack can happen suddenly, so the reliever inhaler must be nearby to open the airways fast.
