Is malaria caused by a bacterium, virus, fungus or protist?

Malaria is caused by a protist, a single-celled parasite called Plasmodium.

How is malaria passed from one person to another?

Malaria is passed on through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito.

In malaria, what is meant by the term ‘vector’?

A vector is an organism that carries a pathogen and spreads it. In malaria, the vector is the mosquito.

Which parts of the body does the malaria parasite mainly infect?

The malaria parasite first infects liver cells, then it infects red blood cells in the blood.

Name two common symptoms of malaria.

Common symptoms are repeated fevers with chills and sweats, and often headaches or feeling very tired.

Why does malaria often cause repeated fever attacks?

The parasites burst out of red blood cells in cycles. This release causes the fever to come back again and again.

In what type of climate is malaria most common, and why?

Malaria is most common in warm, wet tropical climates, where mosquitoes can breed easily in still water.

Give two ways to reduce the spread of malaria.

Use insecticide-treated mosquito nets and remove standing water where mosquitoes lay their eggs.

Why are mosquito nets often treated with insecticide?

The insecticide kills or repels mosquitoes that land on the net, giving extra protection from bites.

How can people who have malaria be treated?

They are given anti-malarial medicines, which kill the parasites in their body.
