Classification Systems Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

In biology, what does classification mean?

Classification means sorting living things into groups based on how similar they are.

What is the main system used to classify living things called?

It is called the Linnaean system of classification, after Carl Linnaeus.

In the Linnaean system, what are the main levels of classification from largest to smallest?

Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.

Which level of classification is the most general, and which is the most specific?

The most general level is kingdom and the most specific level is species.

What is meant by a species in classification?

A species is a group of organisms that can breed together to produce fertile offspring.

What is the binomial naming system?

It is a system that gives each species a two-part Latin name showing its genus and its species.

How should a scientific name be written using the binomial system?

The genus name starts with a capital letter, the species name is lower case, and both are written in italics or underlined.

What is the first part of a binomial name and what does it show?

The first part is the genus name and it shows the group of closely related species that the organism belongs to.

Why do scientists use scientific names instead of common names?

Scientific names are the same in every country and language, so they avoid confusion caused by different common names.

What kind of features are used in classification systems to group organisms?

They use observable characteristics and behaviour, such as body structure, how the organism reproduces and how it feeds.
