The Cell Cycle Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by the cell cycle?

The cell cycle is the repeated pattern of growth, DNA copying, and cell division in a cell.

Give three reasons why the cell cycle is important in your body.

It lets your body grow, repair damaged tissues, and replace old or dead cells.

Name the three main stages of the cell cycle in body cells.

Cell growth, DNA replication (copying of chromosomes), and cell division (mitosis and splitting of the cytoplasm).

What happens to a cell during the growth stage of the cell cycle?

The cell gets bigger and makes more parts, such as mitochondria and ribosomes.

What happens during DNA replication in the cell cycle?

Each chromosome is copied so it has two identical chromatids, ready to be shared between the two new cells.

In the cell cycle, what is mitosis?

Mitosis is the stage when the nucleus divides to form two identical sets of chromosomes.

What happens at the end of mitosis to finish the cell cycle?

The cytoplasm and cell membrane split to make two separate cells. This is called cytokinesis.

What name is given to the new cells made by the cell cycle?

They are called daughter cells. They are genetically identical to each other and to the original cell.

How does the number of chromosomes in each daughter cell compare with the parent cell after one cell cycle?

Each daughter cell has the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell.

Do cells spend more time dividing or more time growing and copying DNA in the cell cycle?

They spend most of the time growing and copying DNA, and only a short time actually dividing.

Do all body cells keep going through the cell cycle all your life?

No. Some cells, such as most nerve cells, leave the cell cycle and stop dividing.
