What is the endocrine system?

It is a body system made of glands that release hormones into the blood to control body functions.

What is a hormone?

A hormone is a chemical messenger made by a gland and carried in the blood to affect parts of the body.

How do hormones travel from glands to other parts of the body?

They are released into the bloodstream and carried in the blood around the body.

What is meant by an endocrine gland?

An endocrine gland is a group of cells that makes hormones and releases them directly into the blood.

Name three endocrine glands in the human body.

Examples of endocrine glands are the pituitary gland, the thyroid gland and the pancreas.

Where is the pituitary gland found and what is its main role?

The pituitary gland is in the brain. It releases hormones that help control many other glands in the body.

Where in the body is the pancreas and what does its endocrine part do?

The pancreas is in the upper abdomen, behind the stomach. It makes hormones that help control blood glucose (sugar) levels.

How does the endocrine system help with homeostasis?

Hormones from endocrine glands help keep the body's internal conditions steady, such as water and blood glucose levels.

How is communication by hormones different from communication by nerves?

Hormones are chemical messages carried in the blood. They act more slowly but their effects can last longer than nerve impulses.

Where are the adrenal glands found and what is one of their jobs?

The adrenal glands sit on top of the kidneys. They release hormones that help the body respond to stress.

Which endocrine glands are found only in males or only in females?

Testes are male endocrine glands and ovaries are female endocrine glands.

What kinds of body processes are controlled by hormones from the endocrine system?

Hormones control processes such as growth, puberty, metabolism, and the balance of water and glucose in the body.
