Light Microscopy for Diagnosis Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a light microscope?

A tool that uses light and glass lenses to make tiny things look bigger.

What does magnification mean when using a light microscope?

Magnification is how many times bigger the image looks than the real object.

What is the equation that links magnification, image size and real size?

Magnification = image size ÷ real size.

What is meant by resolution in microscopy?

Resolution is how clear the image is. It is the ability to see two close points as separate.

Why are light microscopes useful in diagnosing disease?

They let doctors look at samples from a patient. They can then see if microbes are present or if cells look damaged.

Give one example of a patient sample that can be viewed under a light microscope to help diagnose disease.

A thin smear of blood on a slide can be examined under a light microscope to look for pathogens.

Name one type of pathogen that can usually be seen with a light microscope.

Bacteria can usually be seen with a light microscope.

Why can most viruses not be seen with a light microscope?

Most viruses are much smaller than the detail a light microscope can show, so they cannot be seen.

Describe the basic steps to focus a light microscope on a prepared slide.

Place the slide on the stage. Start with the lowest power lens. Use the coarse focus to get a clear image. Then use a higher power lens and the fine focus to sharpen it.

How can the shape and arrangement of bacteria seen under a light microscope help diagnosis?

Different bacteria have different shapes, such as rods or spheres. They may form chains or clusters. These patterns help suggest which type is causing the infection.

Why might a doctor need extra tests as well as light microscopy to diagnose a disease?

Some pathogens are too small to see clearly, and some look very similar. Light microscopy alone may not show exactly which microbe is causing the disease.
