Dominant and Recessive Alleles Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by a dominant allele?

A dominant allele is a version of a gene. Its trait shows even if only one copy is present.

What is meant by a recessive allele?

A recessive allele is a version of a gene. Its trait only shows when there are two copies and no dominant allele.

How many copies of a dominant allele are needed for its trait to appear?

Only one copy is needed. The trait will also appear if there are two copies.

How many copies of a recessive allele are needed for its trait to appear?

Two copies are needed. There must be no dominant allele present.

If a person has one dominant allele and one recessive allele for a gene, which trait will they show?

They will show the dominant trait. The dominant allele masks the recessive allele.

How are dominant and recessive alleles usually written in genetic diagrams?

A dominant allele is shown with a capital letter, like B. A recessive allele is shown with the lower-case letter, like b.

What does it mean to be a carrier of a recessive allele?

A carrier has one dominant and one recessive allele. They do not show the recessive trait but can pass it on.

Can a person show a recessive trait if they also have a dominant allele for that gene?

No. The dominant allele hides the recessive allele, so the recessive trait does not show.

Why can two parents who both show the dominant trait sometimes have a child with the recessive trait?

Both parents may be carriers of the recessive allele. Their child can inherit two recessive alleles and show the recessive trait.
