Homozygous and Heterozygous Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What does homozygous mean?

Homozygous means having two copies of the same allele for a gene.

What does heterozygous mean?

Heterozygous means having two different alleles for a gene.

Give one example of a homozygous genotype using the letter T.

TT or tt are both homozygous genotypes.

Give one example of a heterozygous genotype using the letter T.

Tt is a heterozygous genotype.

What is the difference between homozygous dominant and homozygous recessive?

Homozygous dominant has two dominant alleles (TT). Homozygous recessive has two recessive alleles (tt).

If a person is heterozygous Tt, which allele will affect their trait: T or t?

The dominant allele T will affect their trait.

Why can a heterozygous person be a carrier of a recessive disorder?

They have one normal dominant allele and one recessive disease allele, so they do not show the disorder but can pass it on.

For one gene, how many types of gametes can a homozygous person make?

One type, because both alleles for that gene are the same.

For one gene, how many types of gametes can a heterozygous person make?

Two types, because they can pass on either of their two different alleles.

How can you tell from genetic letters if someone is homozygous or heterozygous?

If the two letters are the same (TT or tt) they are homozygous. If the letters are different (Tt) they are heterozygous.
