Biological Molecules: Lipids Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What are lipids?

Lipids are fats and oils. They are large molecules found in food and in living cells.

Which smaller molecules join together to make a lipid?

A lipid is made when three fatty acids join to one glycerol molecule.

Name three foods that are rich in lipids.

Foods rich in lipids include butter, cheese and cooking oil.

What is the main energy role of lipids in the body?

Lipids act as a long-term energy store. They release a lot of energy when broken down in cells.

How does the energy in 1 gram of lipid compare to 1 gram of carbohydrate?

1 gram of lipid releases about twice as much energy as 1 gram of carbohydrate.

How do lipids help animals to keep warm?

A layer of fat under the skin works as insulation. It slows down heat loss from the body.

How do lipids help to protect organs in the body?

Fat around organs like the kidneys acts as padding. It helps to protect them from knocks.

What is the role of lipids in cell membranes?

Special lipids form most of the cell membrane. They make a thin barrier that controls what enters and leaves the cell.

How are lipids stored in plants?

Plants store lipids as oils in seeds and some fruits. These oils provide energy for the growth of the new plant.

Do lipids dissolve in water?

No. Lipids are insoluble in water, which means they do not dissolve in it.

Which three elements are found in lipids?

Lipids are made of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
