Populations and Communities in Ecosystems Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

In biology, what is a population?

A population is all the organisms of the same species living in the same area at the same time.

What is a community in an ecosystem?

A community is all the different populations of organisms that live and interact in the same area.

What is an ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms and the non-living parts of their environment, such as light, water and soil.

What is meant by a species?

A species is a group of organisms that can breed together to produce fertile offspring.

Put these in order from smallest to largest: community, organism, ecosystem, population.

Organism → population → community → ecosystem.

How is a population different from a community?

A population is one species in an area, but a community is all the different species living together in that area.

Give an example of one population and the community it belongs to.

The population of oak trees in a woodland is part of a community that also includes birds, insects, fungi and many other species.

Name two things that can increase the size of a population.

Births and immigration (organisms moving into the area) can increase the size of a population.

Name two things that can decrease the size of a population.

Deaths and emigration (organisms moving out of the area) can decrease the size of a population.

What is meant by a stable community in an ecosystem?

A stable community is one where the sizes of the different populations stay fairly constant over time, with only small natural changes.
