Transects and Measuring Distribution Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a transect in ecology work?

A transect is a straight line across a habitat along which you take samples.

What does the distribution of a species mean?

Distribution means where a species is found across an area or habitat.

Why would you use a transect instead of random quadrats?

You use a transect when you want to see how the distribution of organisms changes across a habitat. For example, from a path into a woodland or from the top to the bottom of a shore.

How do you set up a simple transect using a tape measure?

Stretch a tape measure in a straight line across the area you want to study. Fix it at the start and end and note the distance along the tape for each sample point.

What is meant by systematic sampling along a transect?

Systematic sampling means taking samples at regular distances along the transect, such as every 1 metre.

How do you use quadrats along a transect to measure plant distribution?

Place a quadrat at each chosen point on the transect. Count the number of each plant species or estimate percentage cover and record the results in a table.

What is the difference between a line transect and a belt transect?

In a line transect you record the species that touch the line at set points. In a belt transect you place quadrats next to each other along the line to sample a strip of habitat.

What is a sampling interval on a transect?

The sampling interval is the distance between each sample point on the transect, for example every 0.5 metres or every 2 metres.

How can you use transect data to show changes in distribution?

You can draw a graph or chart, such as a bar chart. Put distance along the transect on the x-axis and number or percentage cover of each species on the y-axis.

Give one example of when a transect could be used in a school field study.

You could lay a transect from a paved path into a grassy field to see how the types and amounts of plants change with distance from the path.
