Cell Organelles and Their Functions Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a cell organelle?

A cell organelle is a tiny part inside a cell that has a special job, like the nucleus or mitochondria.

Name four main parts found in a typical animal cell.

Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane and mitochondria. Ribosomes are also present.

What is the function of the nucleus in a cell?

The nucleus controls the activities of the cell and contains the genetic material (DNA).

What is the function of the cytoplasm?

The cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance where many chemical reactions happen, such as respiration at the start.

What does the cell membrane do?

The cell membrane controls what goes into and out of the cell, such as oxygen and glucose.

What is the function of mitochondria?

Mitochondria are where most aerobic respiration happens, releasing energy from glucose for the cell.

What is the function of ribosomes?

Ribosomes are where proteins are made in the cell.

Which extra structures are found in plant cells but not in most animal cells?

Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts and a large permanent vacuole that animal cells do not usually have.

What is the function of the cell wall in plant cells?

The cell wall, made of cellulose, supports the cell and helps it keep its shape.

What is the function of chloroplasts?

Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll and are where photosynthesis happens, making food for the plant using light.

What is the function of the permanent vacuole in plant cells?

The permanent vacuole is filled with cell sap and helps support the cell by keeping it firm.
