Magnification and Image Size Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

In biology, what does magnification mean?

Magnification tells you how many times bigger an image is than the real object.

What is meant by the term image size?

Image size is how big the object looks in a picture, photo or drawing.

What is meant by the term actual (real) size?

Actual size is the true size of the object in real life.

What is the equation for magnification using image size and actual size?

Magnification = image size ÷ actual size.

How do you calculate image size if you know the magnification and actual size?

Image size = magnification × actual size.

How do you calculate actual size if you know the magnification and image size?

Actual size = image size ÷ magnification.

Before using the magnification equation, what must be true about the units for image size and actual size?

They must be in the same units. For example, both in millimetres or both in micrometres.

What does a magnification of ×200 mean?

The image is 200 times bigger than the object's actual size.

What are the basic steps to find the magnification of a cell drawing or micrograph?

Measure the image size. Make sure it uses the same units as the actual size. Then do image size ÷ actual size.

How can you use a scale bar on a micrograph to find the actual size of a cell?

Measure the length of the cell and the scale bar on the picture. Work out how many times the scale bar fits into the cell. Multiply that number by the real length the scale bar stands for.
