Standard Form in Biology Calculations Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

In maths and biology, what does ‘standard form’ mean?

Standard form is a way of writing very big or very small numbers as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10.

What is the general format of a number in standard form?

The general format is a × 10^n, where a is 1 or more but less than 10, and n is a whole number that can be positive, zero or negative.

Write 5,000,000 in standard form.

5,000,000 in standard form is 5 × 10^6, because you move the decimal point 6 places to the left to get 5.

Write 0.000005 in standard form.

0.000005 in standard form is 5 × 10^-6, because you move the decimal point 6 places to the right to get 5.

Is 35 × 10^4 written in correct standard form? If not, write it correctly.

No. It should be 3.5 × 10^5, because the first number must be 1 or more but less than 10.

In standard form, when is the power of 10 positive and when is it negative?

The power of 10 is positive for big numbers greater than 1, and negative for small numbers between 0 and 1.

An animal cell is about 0.00001 m long. Write this length in standard form.

0.00001 m in standard form is 1 × 10^-5 m.

Write 4.2 × 10^5 as an ordinary (full) number.

4.2 × 10^5 is 420,000, because you move the decimal point 5 places to the right.

Write 3.6 × 10^-4 as an ordinary (full) number.

3.6 × 10^-4 is 0.00036, because you move the decimal point 4 places to the left.

Which distance is larger: 3 × 10^-4 m or 5 × 10^-5 m?

3 × 10^-4 m is larger, because 10^-4 is a bigger value than 10^-5, even though 5 is bigger than 3.
