Chloroplasts and Chlorophyll Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a chloroplast?

A chloroplast is a small green part of a plant or algal cell where photosynthesis takes place.

In which types of cells are chloroplasts found?

Chloroplasts are found in plant cells and algal cells, but not in animal cells.

Why do many leaf cells near the top of a leaf have lots of chloroplasts?

They are close to the light, so having many chloroplasts lets the plant absorb more light for photosynthesis.

What is chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is a green pigment inside chloroplasts that absorbs light energy for photosynthesis.

Why do most leaves look green?

Leaves look green because chlorophyll in the chloroplasts reflects green light.

What is the main job of chloroplasts in a plant cell?

Their main job is to carry out photosynthesis and make glucose (sugar) for the plant.

Why do root cells usually not contain chloroplasts?

Roots are in the dark soil, so they do not get light and do not need chloroplasts for photosynthesis.

How does the number of chloroplasts in a cell affect its rate of photosynthesis?

Cells with more chloroplasts can absorb more light, so they can photosynthesise faster.

What is the difference between chloroplasts and chlorophyll?

Chloroplasts are the green structures in cells, and chlorophyll is the green pigment inside them that absorbs light.
