Root Hair Cells Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

Where are root hair cells found in a plant?

On the surface of young roots, just behind the root tip.

What is the main job of root hair cells?

To absorb water and mineral ions from the soil into the plant.

Why do root hair cells have a long, thin ‘hair’?

It gives a large surface area so they can absorb more water and minerals.

How does water move from the soil into a root hair cell?

Water enters by osmosis, from higher water concentration in the soil to lower inside the cell.

How do mineral ions usually move into root hair cells from the soil?

They move in by active transport, which uses energy to move ions from low to high concentration.

Why do root hair cells contain many mitochondria?

They release energy for active transport of mineral ions from the soil.

Why is the cell wall of a root hair cell thin?

So water and minerals have only a short distance to move into the cell.

Why do root hair cells not have chloroplasts?

They are underground, where there is little or no light, so photosynthesis cannot happen.

How does having many dissolved mineral ions in a root hair cell help water uptake?

It lowers the water concentration inside the cell, so water moves in from the soil by osmosis.

How are root hair cells adapted to take in substances quickly?

They have a large surface area, thin walls and many mitochondria to speed up absorption.
