Xylem Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is xylem tissue?

Xylem is a plant transport tissue made of long tubes. It carries water and dissolved mineral ions around the plant.

What substances are carried in the xylem?

Xylem carries water and dissolved mineral ions, such as nitrates, from the roots to the rest of the plant.

In which direction does water move in the xylem?

Water in the xylem moves one way only. It goes up from the roots, through the stem, to the leaves.

Why are xylem vessels made of dead, hollow cells?

The cells are dead and hollow so there is a clear, wide tube. This lets water flow easily without being slowed down by cell contents.

Why do xylem vessel walls contain lignin?

Lignin makes the walls thick and strong. This stops the tubes from collapsing when water is pulled up the plant.

What is the transpiration stream?

The transpiration stream is the flow of water from the roots, up through the xylem, to the leaves, driven by water evaporating from the leaf surface.

Where in a plant can you find xylem tissue?

Xylem is found in the centre of roots, in bundles in the stem, and in the veins of leaves.

How does water enter the xylem in the roots?

Water is taken in from the soil by root hair cells. It then moves through the root into the xylem vessels.

How does xylem help support the plant?

The thick, lignified xylem tubes act like a skeleton. They help hold the stem upright and support the leaves.

Why is it useful that xylem vessels have no end walls or cytoplasm?

Without end walls or cytoplasm, the xylem forms one long open tube. This gives more space and less resistance for water to flow.
