Auxins and Tropisms Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is an auxin in plants?

Auxin is a plant hormone that controls the growth of cells.

Where in a shoot is most auxin made?

Most auxin is made in the very tip of a growing shoot.

What is a tropism?

A tropism is when a plant grows towards or away from a stimulus.

What is meant by a positive tropism?

A positive tropism is when a plant grows towards a stimulus.

What is meant by a negative tropism?

A negative tropism is when a plant grows away from a stimulus.

Name two common types of tropism and their stimuli.

Phototropism is growth in response to light; gravitropism is growth in response to gravity.

How does auxin cause a shoot to bend towards light?

More auxin builds up on the shaded side of the shoot. Those cells grow longer, so the shoot bends towards the light.

How does auxin affect growth in shoot cells?

In shoots, auxin makes cells grow longer, so the shoot can bend.

How does auxin affect growth in root cells?

In roots, high levels of auxin slow down cell growth.

How does auxin help a root grow downwards with gravity?

Auxin gathers on the lower side of a root. It slows growth there, so the upper side grows more and the root bends down.
