Plant Responses to Stimuli Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

In biology, what is a stimulus?

A stimulus is any change in the environment that can cause a living thing to respond.

What do we mean by a plant’s response to a stimulus?

It is how a plant changes its growth or behaviour when something in its environment changes.

Give two examples of environmental stimuli that plants can detect.

Plants can detect light and gravity. They can also detect things like water and touch.

Why is light an important stimulus for plants?

Plants need light for photosynthesis, so they respond by growing towards light to make more food.

Why is gravity an important stimulus for plants?

Gravity helps roots grow down into the soil and shoots grow upwards, which helps support the plant and find light and water.

How are plant responses different from most animal responses?

Plant responses are slower and usually involve growth and plant hormones, not fast movement using a nervous system.

What is a tropism?

A tropism is a growth response in which a plant grows towards or away from a stimulus.

What is the difference between positive and negative tropism?

In a positive tropism the plant grows towards the stimulus. In a negative tropism it grows away from the stimulus.

What is phototropism?

Phototropism is a plant’s growth response to light, such as a shoot growing towards a light source.

What is gravitropism (also called geotropism)?

Gravitropism is a plant’s growth response to gravity, such as roots growing downwards in the direction of gravity.
