What is hygiene in the context of preventing disease?

Hygiene means keeping yourself and your surroundings clean. This reduces harmful microbes that can cause disease.

What is sanitation?

Sanitation is providing clean water and safe ways to remove waste. This stops human waste and rubbish from spreading disease.

How does washing your hands with soap help prevent disease?

Soap and water remove and kill microbes on your skin. This makes it harder for them to get into your body.

When should you always wash your hands to reduce the spread of infection?

You should wash your hands after using the toilet, before preparing or eating food, and after coughing, sneezing or touching animals.

Why is safe sewage disposal important for health?

Safe sewage disposal stops human waste getting into drinking water or food. This helps prevent diseases that cause diarrhoea and vomiting.

How can dirty drinking water spread disease?

Dirty water can contain microbes from human or animal waste. When you drink it, these microbes can infect your gut.

Why should raw meat be kept separate from cooked or ready-to-eat food?

Raw meat can carry harmful bacteria. These bacteria can spread to other foods and be eaten.

Why is it important to cook food thoroughly?

High heat kills most harmful bacteria in food. This lowers the chance of food poisoning.

How does covering your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze help stop disease spreading?

It traps droplets that contain microbes. This stops them spreading through the air to other people.

Give two examples of good personal hygiene that help prevent infection.

Good examples include washing your hands often and showering or bathing regularly.

How does proper rubbish disposal help prevent disease spreading?

Proper rubbish disposal stops waste building up. This reduces rats, flies and other pests that can carry microbes.
