  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is isolation in the context of disease?

Isolation is keeping a person who is ill away from healthy people.

What is quarantine?

Quarantine is keeping people who may have been exposed to a disease apart from others, even if they feel well.

How does isolation help stop a communicable disease spreading?

It reduces close contact, so pathogens from the ill person cannot easily pass to new hosts.

How does quarantine help stop a communicable disease spreading?

It keeps people who might be infected away from others. This stops them passing on the disease while we check if they are ill.

Give one situation where quarantine might be used.

Quarantine may be used for people who have travelled from an area with an outbreak, or who have had close contact with an infected person.

What is the incubation period of a disease?

The incubation period is the time between catching a pathogen and showing symptoms.

Why is the incubation period important when deciding how long quarantine should last?

Quarantine should last at least as long as the incubation period, so anyone who is infected will show symptoms before mixing with others again.

Why might hospitals place some patients in isolation rooms or wards?

Hospitals isolate patients with highly infectious diseases to protect other patients, staff, and visitors from infection.

Give one benefit and one drawback of isolation or quarantine.

Benefit: it slows the spread of disease. Drawback: people may feel lonely or be unable to work or go to school.

Why is it important for people to follow isolation or quarantine rules?

If people do not follow the rules, the pathogen can spread to many more people in the community.
