Asexual Reproduction Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by asexual reproduction?

Asexual reproduction is when a new living thing is made from one parent only. No sex cells join, and the offspring have the same genes as the parent.

What type of cell division is used in asexual reproduction?

Asexual reproduction uses mitosis. Mitosis makes new cells that have the same genes as the first cell.

Why do offspring from asexual reproduction show very little genetic variation?

There is no mixing of genes from two parents, so the offspring all have the same genes as the parent. Only rare random changes in DNA, called mutations, can make them different.

What is the name of the asexual reproduction process used by bacteria?

Bacteria reproduce asexually by a process called binary fission.

Describe briefly what happens during binary fission in bacteria.

The bacterial cell copies its DNA, grows bigger, then splits into two cells. Each new cell gets a copy of the DNA.

Give one example of a plant that reproduces asexually using runners.

Strawberry plants reproduce asexually by growing thin stems called runners. The runners form new plants.

Give one example of a plant that reproduces asexually using tubers or bulbs.

Potato plants use tubers and onion plants use bulbs. Each tuber or bulb can grow into a new plant that has the same genes as the parent.

Why can bacteria populations increase very quickly in the right conditions?

Each bacterial cell can reproduce asexually by binary fission. This means the number of cells can double again and again in a short time.
