Cloning Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a clone?

A clone is an organism or cell that is genetically identical to another one.

How are clones made in asexual reproduction?

They are made from one parent only, by cells dividing to give offspring with the same genes.

Give one example of a natural clone in plants.

Strawberry plants make runners that grow into new plants, which are clones of the parent.

What is cloning by cuttings in plants?

A small piece of plant, such as a stem, is cut and planted so it grows roots and becomes a new, identical plant.

What is tissue culture (micropropagation) in plant cloning?

A few plant cells are grown on a jelly with nutrients and hormones to make many new cloned plants.

Give one advantage of cloning plants.

Farmers can quickly produce many plants with the same useful features, such as high yield.

Give one disadvantage of cloning plants.

All the plants are genetically the same, so one disease could kill them all.

What is embryo cloning in animals?

An early embryo is split into several smaller groups of cells, which are put into surrogate mothers to grow into identical animals.

What is adult cell cloning (somatic cell nuclear transfer)?

The nucleus from an adult body cell is put into an egg cell with no nucleus, then it grows into an embryo that is a clone of the adult.

Give one reason why scientists might clone animals.

To copy animals with useful features, such as high milk yield, or to help save rare species.
