Types of Blood Vessels Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What are the three main types of blood vessel in the human body?

The three main types are arteries, veins and capillaries.

What is the main job of arteries?

Arteries carry blood away from the heart to the organs of the body.

How are artery walls adapted to cope with high blood pressure?

Artery walls are thick, with lots of muscle and elastic tissue, and they have a small lumen.

What is the main job of veins?

Veins carry blood back towards the heart from the organs of the body.

How are vein walls different from artery walls?

Vein walls are thinner, with less muscle and elastic tissue, and they have a larger lumen.

Why do veins contain valves?

Veins have valves to stop blood flowing backwards when the blood pressure is low.

What is the main job of capillaries?

Capillaries allow substances like oxygen and glucose to move between the blood and body cells.

How are capillaries adapted for fast diffusion?

Capillaries have very thin walls that are only one cell thick, giving a short distance for diffusion.

How do arteries and veins usually differ in the type of blood they carry?

Most arteries carry oxygenated blood and most veins carry deoxygenated blood, except in the lungs.

How do arteries, veins and capillaries link together in the circulation?

Arteries branch into capillaries in organs, and the capillaries then join up into veins.
