What is blood glucose?

Blood glucose is the sugar dissolved in your blood. Your cells use it for energy.

Why must blood glucose level stay within a narrow range?

If it goes too high or too low, cells cannot work well. This can make you feel ill and damage your body.

Which organ monitors and controls the level of glucose in the blood?

The pancreas monitors the blood and controls the level of glucose.

What are the two main hormones that control blood glucose level?

The two main hormones are insulin and glucagon.

What happens to blood glucose level after you eat a meal high in carbohydrates?

After a high carbohydrate meal, the blood glucose level rises.

How does insulin help to lower a high blood glucose level?

Insulin tells body cells to take in more glucose from the blood. It also makes the liver turn glucose into glycogen for storage.

In what form and where is extra glucose stored in the body?

Extra glucose is stored as glycogen, mainly in the liver and in muscles.

When does blood glucose level tend to fall?

Blood glucose level tends to fall between meals and during exercise, when cells use more glucose.

How does glucagon help to raise a low blood glucose level?

Glucagon makes the liver break down glycogen into glucose. The glucose is then released into the blood.

What is meant by negative feedback in blood glucose control?

Negative feedback means that a change in blood glucose level triggers hormones that bring the level back towards normal.
