Eye Structures and Their Functions Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is the cornea and what is its job?

The cornea is the clear front part of the eye. It bends light as it enters the eye to help focus it.

What does the iris do in the eye?

The iris is the coloured ring of muscle in the eye. It controls how much light enters by changing the size of the pupil.

What is the pupil?

The pupil is the hole in the centre of the iris. Light passes through it into the eye, and it looks black.

What is the role of the lens in the eye?

The lens is a clear, flexible structure behind the pupil. It fine-tunes the focus of light onto the retina by changing shape.

What do the ciliary muscles do?

The ciliary muscles form a ring of muscle around the lens. They contract or relax to change the shape of the lens.

What is the job of the suspensory ligaments?

The suspensory ligaments are tiny fibres that hold the lens in place. They pull on the lens to help change its shape.

What is the retina and what does it do?

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It contains receptor cells that turn light into nerve impulses.

What is the function of the optic nerve?

The optic nerve carries nerve impulses from the retina to the brain. The brain then interprets these as images.

What is the sclera and what is its function?

The sclera is the tough, white outer layer of the eye. It protects the eye and helps it keep its shape.

What is the blind spot in the eye?

The blind spot is where the optic nerve leaves the eye. There are no light receptor cells there, so you cannot see an image at that point.
