Neurone Damage and Repair Limits Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a neurone?

A neurone is a specialised nerve cell that carries electrical signals around the body.

What do we mean by neurone damage?

Neurone damage is when nerve cells are harmed or destroyed so they cannot send signals properly.

Why can damage to the spinal cord cause paralysis?

It can block nerve signals between the brain and parts of the body, so you cannot move or feel those parts.

Why do neurones in the brain and spinal cord rarely repair themselves?

They do not usually divide to make new cells. Their many connections are also very hard for the body to rebuild.

How is neurone repair in the peripheral nervous system different from in the brain and spinal cord?

Some damaged peripheral neurones can regrow and reconnect, but neurones in the brain and spinal cord usually cannot.

Give two examples of things that can damage neurones.

A head injury and a stroke can damage neurones. Other examples include infections and brain tumours.

What problems can neurone damage in the brain cause?

It can cause loss of movement or feeling, and problems with speech, sight, memory or thinking, depending on the area damaged.

Why is it difficult for doctors to treat brain damage?

The brain is very delicate and tightly packed with neurones, so treatment can easily harm healthy areas and cause new problems.

What is meant by permanent loss of function after neurone damage?

It means some abilities, such as moving a limb or speaking clearly, may never return because the damaged neurones cannot be replaced.

What do we mean by limits to neurone repair?

It means that the body and current treatments can only fix some nerve damage, and many injuries to the brain and spinal cord cannot be fully repaired.
