Presenting Data in Tables and Graphs Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

Why do scientists first put their results in a table before drawing a graph?

To organise data clearly so it is easy to read and to spot patterns.

What should be written in a table column heading?

The name of the variable and its unit in brackets, for example Temperature (°C).

In a results table, which variable is usually put in the first column?

The independent variable, the one you change.

Should you repeat the unit in every cell of a table column?

No. You write the unit once in the column heading, not in each cell.

Which type of graph is usually used to show how a continuous variable changes, such as temperature over time?

A line graph.

Which type of chart is used to show categoric data, such as blood group or eye colour?

A bar chart.

What is placed on the x-axis (horizontal axis) of a graph?

The independent variable, the one you choose or change.

What is placed on the y-axis (vertical axis) of a graph?

The dependent variable, the one you measure.

How should you choose the scale for the axes on a graph?

Use evenly spaced numbers that cover all your data and are easy to read.

In a bar chart, should the bars touch each other?

No. There should be gaps between the bars to show separate categories.

What is a line of best fit on a graph?

A straight or smooth line drawn through points to show the main trend in the data.

What type of graph is usually used to show the relationship between two continuous variables?

A scatter graph.
