Electron Shells Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by an electron shell (or energy level) in an atom?

It is a region at a set distance from the nucleus where electrons are likely to be found.

Where are electrons found in an atom?

They move around the nucleus in electron shells, also called energy levels.

What is the maximum number of electrons in the first electron shell?

The first shell can hold a maximum of 2 electrons.

What is the maximum number of electrons in the second and third electron shells (for the first 20 elements)?

The second and third shells can each hold up to 8 electrons.

In what order do electron shells fill in an atom?

Electrons fill the lowest energy shell first, then the next shell, and so on.

How is the electron structure of sodium (atomic number 11) written using shells?

Sodium has 11 electrons, so its electron structure is written as 2,8,1.

What does the period number of an element tell you about its electron shells?

The period number tells you how many electron shells contain electrons.

For elements in Groups 1 to 7, what does the group number tell you about their electrons?

The group number tells you how many electrons are in the outer shell.

Why are noble gases (Group 0) very unreactive?

Because their outer electron shell is full, so they do not need to gain or lose electrons.

How many occupied electron shells are there in an atom with the electron structure 2,8,5?

There are 3 electron shells that contain electrons.
