Concentration in g/dm3 Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by the concentration of a solution?

Concentration is how much solute is dissolved in a certain volume of solution.

What does the unit g/dm3 mean for concentration?

It means grams of solute dissolved in each cubic decimetre (dm3) of solution.

What volume is 1 dm3 the same as in litres?

1 dm3 is the same volume as 1 litre.

How many cubic centimetres (cm3) are there in 1 dm3?

There are 1000 cm3 in 1 dm3.

How do you calculate concentration in g/dm3?

Concentration (g/dm3) = mass of solute (g) ÷ volume of solution (dm3).

How do you calculate the mass of solute from concentration and volume?

Mass (g) = concentration (g/dm3) × volume (dm3).

How do you calculate the volume of solution from mass and concentration?

Volume (dm3) = mass (g) ÷ concentration (g/dm3).

You dissolve 10 g of solute in 0.5 dm3 of water. What is the concentration in g/dm3?

20 g/dm3, because 10 g ÷ 0.5 dm3 = 20 g/dm3.

You dissolve 2.0 g of solute in 250 cm3 of solution. What is the concentration in g/dm3?

8 g/dm3, because 250 cm3 = 0.25 dm3 and 2.0 g ÷ 0.25 dm3 = 8 g/dm3.

If you add more water to a solution but no more solute, what happens to its concentration in g/dm3?

The concentration in g/dm3 decreases; the solution becomes more dilute.
