Making Standard Solutions Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a standard solution?

A standard solution is a solution with a known and accurate concentration.

Why do chemists make and use standard solutions?

They use standard solutions to react with other solutions so they can work out unknown concentrations.

What piece of equipment is used to measure the mass of a solid when making a standard solution?

A balance is used to measure the mass of the solid.

Why must the mass of the solid be measured accurately when making a standard solution?

It must be accurate so the concentration of the solution is correct.

How is the solid usually dissolved before it is put into a volumetric flask?

The solid is placed in a beaker, distilled water is added, and the mixture is stirred until the solid dissolves.

Why do you rinse the beaker, stirring rod and funnel into the volumetric flask?

To make sure all of the dissolved solid is transferred so none is left behind.

Why is a volumetric flask used when making a standard solution?

A volumetric flask is made to hold one exact volume, so the solution has a precise concentration.

Why is distilled or deionised water used instead of tap water when making a standard solution?

Distilled water has no extra dissolved ions that could change the concentration of the solution.

When filling a volumetric flask, where should the bottom of the meniscus be?

The bottom of the meniscus should sit on the calibration line when viewed at eye level.

What should you do after filling the volumetric flask to the line to make sure the solution is mixed?

You should put the stopper in and invert the flask several times to mix the solution evenly.
