Reaction Profiles Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a reaction profile?

A reaction profile is a diagram that shows how the energy of a reaction changes from reactants to products.

What is shown on the vertical axis of a reaction profile?

The vertical axis shows the energy of the chemicals, usually in kilojoules (kJ).

What is shown on the horizontal axis of a reaction profile?

The horizontal axis shows the progress of the reaction from reactants to products.

In a reaction profile, how do you recognise an exothermic reaction?

In an exothermic reaction profile, the products are at a lower energy level than the reactants.

In a reaction profile, how do you recognise an endothermic reaction?

In an endothermic reaction profile, the products are at a higher energy level than the reactants.

What does the highest point on a reaction profile represent?

The highest point on a reaction profile shows the activation energy, the maximum energy during the reaction.

How is activation energy shown on a reaction profile?

Activation energy is shown by an arrow from the reactants’ energy level up to the top of the curve.

How do you find the overall energy change from a reaction profile?

You compare the energy level of the reactants and the products and measure the difference between them.

On a reaction profile, what does a tall peak above the reactants mean?

A tall peak means the reaction has a large activation energy, so more energy is needed to start it.

How does a catalyst change a reaction profile?

A catalyst gives an alternative pathway with a lower peak, so the activation energy is smaller but the start and end energy levels stay the same.
