Dynamic Equilibrium Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is dynamic equilibrium in a reversible reaction?

Dynamic equilibrium is when the forward and backward reactions happen at the same rate.

In dynamic equilibrium, what happens to the amounts of reactants and products over time?

The amounts stay constant, even though reactions are still happening both ways.

Why is the word “dynamic” used in dynamic equilibrium?

Because particles keep reacting in both directions, so the system is still active.

What must be true about the rates of the forward and backward reactions at dynamic equilibrium?

The rates of the forward and backward reactions must be equal.

Does dynamic equilibrium mean the reaction has stopped?

No. The reaction continues both ways, but there is no overall change.

What type of system is needed for dynamic equilibrium to be reached?

A closed system, where no substances can enter or leave.

At dynamic equilibrium, what visible changes do you see in the mixture?

You usually see no visible change; the mixture looks the same.

Can dynamic equilibrium happen in any reaction?

No. It only happens in reversible reactions in a closed system.

What does it mean if the position of equilibrium lies to the right?

At equilibrium there are more products than reactants in the mixture.

What does it mean if the position of equilibrium lies to the left?

At equilibrium there are more reactants than products in the mixture.
