Reversible Reactions Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a reversible reaction?

A reversible reaction is a reaction that can go both ways, from reactants to products and back again.

What symbol is used in an equation to show that a reaction is reversible, and what does it mean?

We use a double arrow, ⇌. It means the reaction can go in both directions.

How is a reversible reaction different from an irreversible reaction, like burning paper?

In a reversible reaction, the products can change back into the reactants. In an irreversible reaction, the products cannot change back.

In a reversible reaction, what are the forward and reverse reactions?

The forward reaction goes from reactants to products. The reverse reaction goes from products back to reactants.

What happens when solid ammonium chloride is heated, and what happens when it cools again?

When solid ammonium chloride is heated, it breaks down to make ammonia gas and hydrogen chloride gas. When these gases cool, they react together again to form solid ammonium chloride.

In the reversible reaction between anhydrous copper sulfate and water, what colour change do you see when water is added?

White anhydrous copper sulfate turns blue when water is added, because hydrated copper sulfate forms.

In the same copper sulfate reaction, what happens when the blue hydrated copper sulfate is heated strongly?

When blue hydrated copper sulfate is heated strongly, it loses water and turns back to white anhydrous copper sulfate.

If the forward direction of a reversible reaction is exothermic, what is true about the reverse direction?

If the forward reaction is exothermic and gives out energy, the reverse reaction is endothermic and takes in energy.

In a reversible reaction, how do the energy changes of the forward and reverse reactions compare?

The forward and reverse reactions transfer the same amount of energy, but in opposite directions.
