Alloys and Their Uses Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is an alloy?

An alloy is a mixture of a metal with one or more other elements, often other metals.

Why are pure metals usually soft and easy to bend?

Pure metals have layers of atoms in a regular pattern, so the layers can slide over each other easily.

Why are alloys usually harder than pure metals?

Different sized atoms in an alloy break up the regular layers, so the layers cannot slide past each other as easily, making the metal harder.

What is steel and give one common use for it.

Steel is an alloy of iron with carbon (and sometimes other metals). It is used for buildings, bridges and car bodies.

What is stainless steel and why is it useful?

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron with chromium and often nickel. It does not rust easily, so it is used for cutlery, sinks and kitchen equipment.

What metals make up bronze and give one use for it.

Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin. It is used for statues, medals and bells.

What metals make up brass and give one use for it.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It is used for taps, door handles and musical instruments.

Why is gold for jewellery usually an alloy, not pure gold?

Pure gold is very soft and bends easily. Gold alloys are harder and more durable, so they are better for jewellery.

Why are aluminium alloys used for aeroplane bodies?

Aluminium alloys are low in mass (light), yet strong and resistant to corrosion, so they are ideal for aeroplane bodies.

Name two properties of a metal that can be changed by making it into an alloy.

Alloys can change a metal’s hardness and strength, and can also improve its resistance to corrosion.
