Mass Spectrometry Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is mass spectrometry?

Mass spectrometry is a method that uses a machine to measure the masses of ions.

What is the name of the instrument used in mass spectrometry?

The instrument is called a mass spectrometer.

In mass spectrometry, what must happen to the sample before it can be measured?

The sample must be turned into positive ions.

Why does a mass spectrometer need ions instead of neutral atoms or molecules?

Because only charged particles can be moved and detected by the instrument.

State the four main stages in a simple mass spectrometer, in order.

Ionisation, acceleration, separation by mass, then detection of the ions.

What does a mass spectrometer separate particles by?

It separates them by their mass and charge, called their mass-to-charge ratio.

What is a mass spectrum?

It is the graph produced by a mass spectrometer that shows the masses of ions and how much of each there is.

How can mass spectrometry help scientists study isotopes of an element?

It shows different signals for each isotope, so their masses and abundances can be found.

Give one use of mass spectrometry in chemistry.

It can identify an unknown substance by measuring the masses of its ions.

Is mass spectrometry an instrumental method of analysis? What does this mean?

Yes. It means it uses a machine to analyse a substance instead of simple test-tube reactions.
