Displacement Reactions Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a displacement reaction?

A displacement reaction is when a more reactive element takes the place of a less reactive element in a compound.

In a metal displacement reaction, which type of metal can displace another from its compound?

A more reactive metal can displace a less reactive metal from its compound.

Give the word equation for the reaction between iron and copper sulfate solution.

Iron + copper sulfate → iron sulfate + copper.

Will zinc displace copper from copper sulfate solution? Explain your answer.

Yes. Zinc is more reactive than copper, so it displaces copper from copper sulfate solution.

Will copper displace magnesium from magnesium sulfate solution? Explain your answer.

No. Copper is less reactive than magnesium, so it cannot displace magnesium from its compound.

How does the reactivity series help you predict metal displacement reactions?

If a metal is higher in the reactivity series, it will displace a metal that is lower from its compound in solution.

What colour changes do you see when iron reacts with blue copper sulfate solution?

The blue colour fades as iron sulfate forms, and a brown solid layer of copper forms on the iron.

What is a halogen displacement reaction?

It is a reaction where a more reactive halogen, such as chlorine, displaces a less reactive halogen from its salt solution.

Give a word equation for chlorine displacing bromine from potassium bromide solution.

Chlorine + potassium bromide → potassium chloride + bromine.

How does reactivity change down Group 7, and how does this affect halogen displacement reactions?

In Group 7, reactivity decreases as you go down. A halogen higher up, like chlorine, can displace halogens lower down, like bromine or iodine.
