Converting Between Mass and Moles Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by the molar mass (Mr) of a substance?

It is the mass of 1 mole of that substance in grams. It has the unit g/mol.

What equation links mass, moles and molar mass?

Mass (g) = number of moles × molar mass (g/mol).

How do you calculate the number of moles from a known mass?

Divide the mass in grams by the molar mass. Use: moles = mass (g) ÷ molar mass (g/mol).

How do you calculate the mass from a known number of moles?

Multiply the number of moles by the molar mass. Use: mass (g) = moles × molar mass (g/mol).

In which unit must you put mass when using the moles equation at GCSE?

You must use grams (g), not kilograms.

How do you find the molar mass of an element like magnesium (Mg)?

Read its Ar from the periodic table. For Mg, Ar = 24, so the molar mass is 24 g/mol.

How do you find the molar mass (Mr) of water, H2O?

Add the Ar values of the atoms. Mr = (2 × 1) + 16 = 18 g/mol.

How many moles are in 10 g of water, H2O? (Mr = 18)

Moles = mass ÷ Mr = 10 g ÷ 18 g/mol ≈ 0.56 mol.

What mass of carbon dioxide, CO2, is in 0.5 mol? (Mr = 44)

Mass = moles × Mr = 0.5 mol × 44 g/mol = 22 g.

Why do chemists convert between mass and moles?

It links the mass you can measure on a balance to the amount of substance in moles. This helps you work out how much of a substance to use or make.
