Measuring Rate of Reaction Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by the rate of reaction?

It is how fast reactants are used up or products are made in a chemical reaction.

Write a word formula for finding the rate of reaction.

Rate of reaction = amount of reactant used or product formed divided by time taken.

If you measure the volume of gas made, what units could you use for rate?

You can use centimetres cubed per second, written as cm^3/s.

If you measure the mass of a reactant used up, what units could you use for rate?

You can use grams per second, written as g/s.

How do you use a gas syringe to measure the rate of a reaction that makes a gas?

Connect the flask to a gas syringe. Start the reaction and a timer together. Record the gas volume in the syringe at regular times.

How do you use a balance to measure the rate of a reaction that gives off a gas?

Place the flask on a balance. Start the reaction and a timer together. Record the mass at regular times as the mass goes down.

What visual change is used to measure the rate in the disappearing cross experiment?

The mixture turns cloudy so you can no longer see a black cross under the flask.

In the disappearing cross experiment, what do you measure to work out the rate?

You measure the time it takes for the cross to disappear from view.

Why must you measure the time accurately when finding the rate of reaction?

Because rate depends on time, so poor timing gives a wrong value for the rate.

A reaction makes 80 cm^3 of gas in 40 seconds. What is the average rate of reaction?

Rate = volume ÷ time = 80 cm^3 ÷ 40 s = 2 cm^3/s.
