Nanoparticles Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a nanoparticle?

A nanoparticle is a very tiny particle made of a substance, with a size between 1 nm and 100 nm.

What size range in metres do nanoparticles have?

Nanoparticles are about 1 x 10^-9 m to 1 x 10^-7 m across.

What is meant by a nanomaterial?

A nanomaterial is a material that contains nanoparticles, or has features that are between 1 nm and 100 nm in size.

What is nanoscience (or nanotechnology)?

Nanoscience is the study and use of very small structures such as nanoparticles and nanomaterials.

What does the term "bulk material" mean?

A bulk material is the same substance in larger pieces, made of a huge number of atoms, not tiny nanoparticles.

How do the properties of nanoparticles often compare with the bulk material of the same substance?

Nanoparticles can have different properties, such as different colour or reactivity, from the same substance in bulk form.

Roughly how many atoms or molecules does a nanoparticle contain?

A nanoparticle usually contains only a few hundred atoms or molecules.

Why can changing a substance into nanoparticles change how it behaves?

Because the particles are so small, many of their atoms are on the surface, so they can interact more easily and behave differently.
