Balanced Symbol Equations Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a symbol equation in chemistry?

A symbol equation is a chemical equation that uses formulas and symbols instead of words, for example H2 + O2 → H2O.

What does it mean if a symbol equation is "balanced"?

It means there are the same number of each type of atom on both sides of the arrow.

Why do chemists need to balance symbol equations?

Because atoms are not made or destroyed in reactions, so the number of each atom must be the same before and after the reaction.

When balancing a symbol equation, which numbers are you allowed to change?

You are only allowed to change the large numbers in front of formulas, called coefficients.

Why should you not change the small numbers in a chemical formula when balancing?

Because changing small numbers changes the actual substance, not just how much of it there is.

What are the basic steps to balance a simple symbol equation?

Write the correct formulas, count the atoms on each side, change the big numbers to balance one element at a time, then check all atoms match.

Is the equation Mg + O2 → MgO balanced? Explain your answer.

No, it is not balanced because there are 2 oxygen atoms on the left but only 1 oxygen atom on the right.

What is the balanced symbol equation for magnesium reacting with oxygen to form magnesium oxide?

2Mg + O2 → 2MgO.

What is the balanced symbol equation for hydrogen reacting with oxygen to make water?

2H2 + O2 → 2H2O.

What do the big numbers in a balanced symbol equation tell you about the reaction?

They show the ratio of particles or moles of each substance that react or are formed.
