Percentage Yield Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What does percentage yield compare in a chemical reaction?

It compares the actual amount of product you get with the maximum theoretical amount you could get, as a percentage.

State the formula for percentage yield using masses.

Percentage yield = (actual mass of product ÷ theoretical mass of product) × 100.

What is meant by the actual yield of a reaction?

The actual yield is the mass of product that is really made in the experiment.

What is meant by the theoretical yield of a reaction?

The theoretical yield is the maximum mass of product that could be made, worked out from the balanced symbol equation.

What does a percentage yield close to 100% tell you about a reaction?

It tells you the reaction is very efficient at making the desired product, with very little loss.

What does a percentage yield much less than 100% tell you about a reaction?

It tells you that much less product was made than expected, so the process is not very efficient.

Does percentage yield have units? Explain your answer.

No. Percentage yield has no units because it is a ratio of two masses multiplied by 100, so the units cancel out.
