Melting Point and Conductivity Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by the melting point of a substance?

The melting point is the temperature at which a solid turns into a liquid.

If a substance has a melting point much higher than room temperature, what state will it be at room temperature (about 20 °C)?

It will be a solid, because room temperature is below its melting point.

If a substance has a melting point below room temperature, what state will it be at room temperature?

It will be a liquid, because room temperature is above its melting point.

Why is a high melting point useful when choosing a material for a saucepan or oven lining?

A high melting point means the material will not melt or change shape when it gets very hot.

What is electrical conductivity?

Electrical conductivity is how easily electric current can pass through a material.

What is thermal (heat) conductivity?

Thermal conductivity is how easily heat energy can pass through a material.

What is an electrical conductor?

An electrical conductor is a material that lets electric current pass through it easily.

What is an electrical insulator?

An electrical insulator is a material that does not let electric current pass through it easily.

Are metals usually good or poor conductors of heat and electricity?

Metals are usually good conductors of both heat and electricity.

Why is plastic often used to coat electrical wires?

Plastic is an electrical insulator and a poor conductor of heat, so it helps stop electric shocks and keeps the wires safe to touch.
