Heating and Cooling Curves Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What does a heating curve show?

It shows how the temperature of a substance changes as it is heated and changes state.

What does a cooling curve show?

It shows how the temperature of a substance changes as it cools down and changes state.

What is usually on the axes of a heating or cooling curve graph?

Temperature is on the vertical axis, and time or energy supplied is on the horizontal axis.

What does a sloping line on a heating curve mean?

The substance is being heated in one state, so its temperature is rising.

What does a flat line on a heating curve mean?

The substance is changing state, so the temperature stays the same while it melts or boils.

Why does the temperature stay constant during melting or boiling, even when heating continues?

The added energy is used to break forces between particles. It does not raise the temperature.

Where is the melting point on a heating curve for pure water?

It is the flat part where ice turns to liquid water, at 0 °C.

Where is the boiling point on a heating curve for pure water?

It is the flat part where liquid water turns to steam, at 100 °C.

What does a flat line on a cooling curve mean?

The substance is changing state, such as freezing or condensing, while its temperature stays the same.

How can a heating curve show if a substance is pure?

A pure substance changes state at one fixed temperature. A mixture changes state over a range of temperatures, so the line slopes instead of staying flat.
